A pop-up appears on a website saying you're visitor number one million, or that you've won a mobile phone or a gift card. To get the prize, you have to answer a few questions, fill in your details or pay a small shipping fee. The prize doesn't exist. The scammers want your card details or to sell your contact details on.

Warning signs

  • You've won something without entering a competition.

  • There's a countdown, or only a few prizes left.

  • You have to pay shipping or a fee to get a free prize.

  • The small print says you're starting a subscription.

How do you avoid this?

  • Close the pop-up or the tab without clicking anything in it.
  • Never enter card details to claim a prize.
  • Use an ad blocker in your browser, so you'll see fewer pop-ups like this.

Has this happened to you?

  • Have you given your card details? Call your bank right away and block the card.
  • Is money being taken for a subscription you didn't want? Ask the bank to dispute the charges.
  • Report it to the police at polisen.se or call 114 14.
