"You've won the lottery!"

Last updated

You get a call, a text message or an email saying you've won a large sum in a lottery. To receive the prize, you first have to pay a fee, for example for tax or administration, or hand over your bank details. The prize doesn't exist, and the money you pay is gone.

Warning signs

  • You've won a lottery you don't remember entering.

  • You have to pay something before you can get the prize.

  • You are asked to keep the prize secret or to answer quickly.

How do you avoid this?

  • Never pay a fee to receive a prize. Real lotteries don't charge for that.
  • Never give your bank details or personal identity number to someone who contacts you about a prize.
  • If you're unsure, contact the lottery yourself through its official website.

Has this happened to you?

  • Don't pay anything more, even if they come up with new fees.
  • Contact your bank right away. Sometimes a payment can be stopped.
  • Report it to the police at polisen.se or call 114 14.
