Tech Support Scams

Last updated

Someone calls and says they're from Microsoft, Apple or your internet provider. They claim your computer has a virus or has been hacked. To "fix" it, they ask you to install a program, for example AnyDesk or TeamViewer, so they can control the computer. Then they can steal your details, log in to your bank or charge you for help you don't need.

Warning signs

  • You get a call without having asked for help.

  • You're asked to install a program so someone can control your computer.

  • You're asked to log in to your bank while they have access to the computer.

  • They want to be paid, preferably with gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Microsoft and Apple never call you about viruses on your computer.

How do you avoid this?

  • Hang up right away. Never give anyone who calls you access to your computer.
  • If you need help with your computer, contact someone you trust yourself.

Has this happened to you?

  • Disconnect the computer from the internet or turn it off.
  • Call your bank right away if you've logged in to your bank or given card details.
  • Uninstall the program they asked you to install and change your passwords from another device.
  • Report it to the police at polisen.se or call 114 14.
